Downrigger shoppers spend most of their comparison time on boom length and overall build quality, but cable capacity and release reliability are what actually determine whether you hold consistent depth, and whether a striking fish trips the release at all.
Buy more cable capacity than your typical working depth requires, not a bare match to it. A rigger rated right at your usual depth leaves no room for the day you find deeper structure, or for current pushing your presentation deeper than the drop calculation assumed.
Release tension is where things get genuinely finicky. A long-running thread on the Bloodydecks forum about downrigger clips shows how inconsistent the reputation is, even for the market-leading brand. The thread starter’s complaint was blunt: “Mine always seems to pop prematurely. The Scotty clips only seem to last about 2 days for me.” Further down the same thread, another angler reported something odder: no wear, no visible cause, just intermittent failure. “With the Scotty ones I found after using em for an hour or two they quit holding good,” he wrote. “But on the next trip they work good again.” Nobody in the thread explained why. That’s the honest state of release-clip reliability: mostly fine, occasionally and unpredictably not, regardless of brand loyalty.
Several anglers in that same discussion converged on one workaround rather than a brand switch: running a mono or fluorocarbon top-shot ahead of the clip, even on an otherwise all-braid setup, because braid alone doesn’t hold as securely in a release clip’s jaws. Another mentioned resetting the tension clip to its lowest setting at the end of every session, on the theory that leaving it cranked back wears out the tension early. Manual units cost less and have fewer parts to fail, which suits anyone who doesn’t mind the physical retrieval effort. Boom length and mounting configuration matter more once you’re running three or four riggers rather than one. Spacing that’s fine for a single unit can tangle badly once a spread gets added.
Weight and ball design get less attention than the downrigger itself, but current and trolling speed both push a poorly designed weight off a true vertical drop, a drift called “blowback,” which throws off actual presentation depth more than the unit’s own spec sheet would suggest. Shape matters more than most anglers realize: round cannonball-style weights are the traditional default, but torpedo or fish-shaped weights are built specifically to cut through water with less resistance, tracking straighter and resisting blowback far better at trolling speed or in real current. Confirm mounting compatibility with your specific boat before buying. Not every downrigger bolts cleanly to every gunwale or transom, and finding that out after the box is open is a frustrating way to lose an afternoon.
